Chief Johnston brings 28 years of dedicated service to policing, with experience spanning front-line operations through to senior executive leadership within the Barrie Police Service. His career reflects a strong commitment to advancing modern, evidence-based approaches in law enforcement.
He holds a BA (Honours) in Philosophy from Queen’s University, an MA in Leadership Studies from the University of Guelph, and a Master of Studies in Applied Criminology and Police Management from the University of Cambridge.
A nationally recognized advocate for Evidence-Based Policing, Chief Johnston is Director of Research on the Board of the Canadian Society of Evidence Based Policing, a Board Member of the Coalition for Canadian Police Reform, and Strategy & Governance Working Group Lead for the CACP Research Advisory Committee. His leadership has been recognized through his selection as an NIJ L.E.A.D.S. Scholar, induction into the George Mason University Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame, and the OACP Excellence in Leadership Award.
