Sergeant (Ret.)/Owner/Trainer/Consultant
Appleton (WI) Police Department/Gold Stripe Consulting, LLC
John started his career in law enforcement with the Hartland Police Department in 1994. John joined the Appleton Police Department in 2002.
In 2004, John became Wisconsin’s first “Memphis Model” based Community Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer after attending the 40-hour course at the Akron, OH. PD. John sees CIT as the best law enforcement model of training on crisis response available and has helped develop it, in conjunction with NAMI Fox Valley, not only at the Appleton Police Department but throughout Wisconsin. John is part of the Wisconsin CIT Advisory Committee to NAMI Wisconsin, who anchors a State funded grant to maintain quality assurance and grow CIT in WI.
On John’s “bucket list” before retiring was establishing a County Wide Peer Support Program. With the help of many people, including current Appleton Police Chief Polly Olson, the Peer Support program became operational in 2013, serving all first responders & their families in Outagamie County. John and Polly co-wrote an article in the March 2018 IACP Police Chief Magazine detailing the steps in starting a county wide peer support team. Their efforts resulted in the NBJA National Valor Award in 2016.
