Challenging Common Training Myths: Applying Advanced Coaching Concepts for Improved Learning, Retention, and Decision-Making
Sunday, October 19, 2025
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM MT
Location: 503/504, Colorado Convention Center
This session challenges three common training myths in law enforcement and introduces advanced coaching principles from motor learning to improve knowledge retention, skill transfer, and decision-making under pressure. First, we’ll examine why strong performance during training does not necessarily indicate learning or transfer, and how spaced training—rather than traditional block-style methods—can improve long-term retention. Second, we’ll debunk the idea that high-stress training alone leads to “stress inoculation,” showing instead how poorly structured stress exposure can hinder performance. Finally, we’ll explore why allowing trainees to fail is essential for developing adaptive decision-making, and how failure-based learning can be effectively integrated into academy and field training. Attendees will leave with practical, evidence-based strategies to modernize training and better prepare officers for real-world challenges.
