The Importance of Neuropsychological Testing for Police Officer Wellness

Neuropsychological testing is crucial to understanding and improving the well-being of police officers. There are several critical times when such testing should be conducted—for example, when officers engage in high-risk behavior, are referred for a fitness-for-duty evaluation, or present with mental health disorders. Ruling out a neurological component to a psychological issue is imperative for proper diagnosis and treatment. Too often, an officer’s behavior is overlooked or attributed solely to factors such as trauma exposure, sleep disturbances, or impulsivity. This workshop will explore the importance of incorporating neuropsychological testing into wellness initiatives and raise awareness of research on the effects of head impacts and injuries.
