Peter Ayling has been DCC since 3rd October 2022. He is responsible for operational delivery of policing in Kent, overseeing 7000 officers and staff. He joined Kent Police in 1998 and has extensive experience in territorial policing, public order and firearms command and strategic partnerships. He is also the Force Champion for Equality, Diversity and Human Rights.
In 2011 Peter joined the Metropolitan Police Service on promotion to supt. He was Borough Commander for Westminster, the Met’s largest operational command unit. He led on critical issues including policing of the West End, a world centre for tourism and entertainment. In 2017 Peter was responsible for recovery following three terror attacks in London. As a member of the Met Advanced Public Order Cadre, Peter has commanded in high risk, complex environments across London including mass protest, high profile football fixtures and ceremonial events.
Peter also holds the International Crime and EU Exit portfolio for the National Police Chiefs Council, working closely with the National Crime Agency and government agencies to respond to international threats and build capability across police forces.
