Chief Mike Brown served the Salt Lake City Police Department for 33 years, retiring in February 2025 after nearly a decade as Chief of Police. His distinguished career included service as a patrol officer, gang detective, Motor officer, and as part of the department’s first generation of SWAT snipers. Chief Brown advanced strategies in crime reduction, traffic safety, and crisis response, established the city’s anti-vehicle cruising ordinance, and created its first POST-certified training satellite academy. He contributed to major public safety events, including the 2002 Olympic Torch Run. Nationally, Chief Brown serves on the International Association of Chiefs of Police Forensic Science Committee and has held leadership roles with the Major Cities Chiefs Association, including Western Region Representative and 1st and 2nd Vice President. He most recently led efforts that brought crime in Salt Lake City to a 16-year low and spearheaded the stratified policing model to address violent crime.
