Maximizing Investigative Leads through CODIS Hit Follow-Up: Lessons from the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI)

Since 2015, the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) has supported the testing of previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits for entry into CODIS, generating investigative leads that can link cases and identify serial offenders. Despite these advancements, many law enforcement agencies miss critical opportunities to act on CODIS “hits,” hindering case resolution. This panel will examine best practices for managing CODIS hit follow-up to ensure that valuable leads are pursued. Attendees will receive practical recommendations and resources to support a consistent process for CODIS hit notifications, tracking systems, and formal policy development. The discussion will also highlight how these improvements have enhanced investigations and addressed gaps that limit the effective use of CODIS.
