Fulfilling Police Missions through Officer Wellness

How do we retain officers in policing? How do we keep them healthy, committed to the mission, and positively engaged with the community? By taking care of our officers and staff. This presentation will highlight the Idaho Falls Police Department’s (IFPD) success with initiatives such as peer support, professional resources, supportive policies, and best practices designed to sustain the well-being of officers and staff. It will also detail IFPD’s experience creating a TRUST (Traumatic Response Unified Support) Team, developing a partnership with a local counseling agency, and embedding counselors within the department. In addition, the presentation will cover procedural and policy changes aimed at supporting officers in the modern era of policing. As a small to midsize agency, IFPD offers a relatable model from which many attendees may draw inspiration.
