    Preemployment Psychological Evaluations for Police Officer Candidates: Comparing Virtual and In-Person Delivery Methods

    Telemedicine, once considered an odd idea by many police chiefs, became normalized during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Before the pandemic, conducting preemployment psychological evaluations (PPE) of police officer candidates via telehealth was limited to a few psychologists in remote areas lacking qualified local professionals. During the pandemic, virtual PPE became a necessity—and soon, a common practice among police psychologists. This presentation will examine the advantages and disadvantages of both virtual and in-person PPE, highlight published research demonstrating the equivalency of the two methods, discuss how the IACP guidelines on PPE relate to this topic, and debunk common myths surrounding PPE.
