Are You Sure You're Interviewing a Real Person? The Growing Risk of AI-Generated Real-Time Deepfakes on Videoconferencing Calls

As law enforcement and justice systems increasingly rely on internet-based solutions for real-time video feeds, remote investigative interviews, legal meetings, and applicant screenings, it is becoming vitally important to verify that participants are who they claim to be—and that they are real. Online interviews and meetings offer justice practitioners significant operational benefits, which can be equally valuable to high-volume urban agencies and rural police departments. However, real-time deepfakes—allowing individuals to assume another identity—can now be generated by novice AI users and are nearly impossible to detect with the naked eye. This session will examine the potential impact of this emerging threat on law enforcement and explore strategies to counter it.
